Some Great Indoor Herb Garden Ideas
We hope you’re ready to get quite creative with your herb garden. That’s certainly what we have aimed for below.
1. A Mason Jar Herb Garden

2. A Teacup Herb Garden
If you want to make things a little bit more whimsical, using old teacups to make a herb garden is another idea. Of course, you can always use new teacups too.
If you’re looking for something super unique, check out your local flea market. Teacups are the perfect size for smaller herbs such as chives.
If you have the right tools, you can even drill a hole in the bottom of the teacups for good drainage. You will need a special drill bit for this, however. You can then use the little plate for the teacup as a water holder.
3. A Vintage Shoe Herb Garden
Perhaps one of the most unique ideas on the list today is to make an indoor herb garden out of old shoes. You do probably want to go for shoes that still look decent. More importantly, you also want to choose somewhat clean shoes that don’t smell.
However, this is still a very unique option that some people might love. This is especially the case if you want to keep your herb garden on the ground.
There is also the added benefit that shoes can hold onto a good bit of soil. This means that you should be able to grow fairly large herbs while providing them with enough space for their roots to grow. Using some old vintage boots will liven things up a bit.
4. A Herb Garden Aquarium
One of our favorite options on this list today is to use an old aquarium to make a herb garden. Now, what’s neat is that this can be done in a wide variety of ways.
You could fill up a good deal of the aquarium with soil and then just make one large herb garden. You can always plant a variety of herbs, or just plant one herb en masse.
Even better is if you engage in a bit of landscaping, so to speak. As far as aquariums are concerned, aqua scaping is very popular. In other words, this involves making a landscape out of various plants. This is a cool thing to do if you’ve got some time on your hands and love being creative.
Besides your herbs, you can also add some sticks, rocks, and other decorations. You can therefore make a whole landscape or piece of scenery out of a herb garden. You can use smaller herbs to imitate larger trees and plants. If you’re going for a great visual effect, this is it.

5. A Tea Tin Herb Garden
If you are somebody who loves drinking tea, chances are you have some old tea tins laying around the house. Those old tea tins come in a variety of sizes.
Moreover, they are made out of thin metal, so they’re also quite durable. They often feature a very vintage design as well.
If you are planning on growing your herbal tea, then this is a fantastic idea. What’s better than growing new tea leaves in old tea tins? It might not be the creative feat of the century, but it will look pretty cool, nonetheless.
6. Using Wall Storage as a Herb Garden
There are of course plenty of wall storage devices out there. People often have these in their kitchens for spices, pots and pans, large pieces of cutlery, and more. Well, why not convert some of this wall storage space into a herb garden?
You can always make a little frame out of wood and then set some pots in that frame, or just attach parts directly to the wall.
What’s cool about this idea is that you can have your herb garden growing directly on your kitchen walls. That way, whenever you need some herbs to cook with, you can just reach up and pluck them right out of the pots.
7. Make a Vertical Herb Garden
Another cool indoor herb garden idea is to make a vertical herb garden. You can always build your own vertical herb garden setup. That said, there are plenty of vertical gardens out there that you can purchase for relatively low prices.
These vertical gardens are specially designed to make life a whole lot easier. They usually feature great irrigation systems so water drips down from the top plants to the bottom ones. What’s also neat is that these can be made out of all sorts of materials.
They can also come in all sorts of shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs. Vertical gardens are also very convenient because they help save a lot of space.
8. A Baking Tin Herb Garden
One of the coolest things you can do is to make an old baking tin into a herb garden. Here we are talking about those circular cake forms. This one is going to take a little bit of work. You will need to cut some clear plastic, plexiglass, or glass.
You want to cut this to the size and shape so that you can cover the bottom third of the baking tin. Keep in mind that here you are turning the baking tin on its side.
You then use some super glue to attach that clear plastic or glass to the baking tin, on each side. You can then fill that section with soil. You can then plant your herbs inside of that baking tin herb garden and hang it on a wall.
9. Create Your Own Planter Box Art Project
Something else you could try doing here is to just create your planter box. If you are a handy person, get some nice wood and shape your planter box.
You can then paint, stain, and decorate it in any way you see fit. It’s certainly something that allows you to work with your hands and to get creative too.
10. Old Liquor Bottle Planters
If you have some really neat alcohol bottles laying around, these can be used for a herb garden as well. Here, you are going to need to cut off the stem of the bottle. There are various ways to cut glass bottles cleanly, so research this front.
